Matches personal ingredient preferences based on label evidence; not medical, allergy, or dietary safety advice

What the label is naming

This is the generic sugar entry: sucrose, table sugar, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, beet sugar, coconut sugar, and the bare word sugar. More specific cane, brown, and invert pages win when those phrases are fully printed. Negations are respected: sugar-free, no added sugar, and without sugar do not flag.

Where it hides

Almost every sweetened packaged food, often as the second ingredient. It also appears in sauces, bread, and peanut butter spreads. Honey and maple syrup are intentionally not aliases in V1.

Label-reading tips

Check a label for Sugar

Paste an ingredient list. This checker looks only for Sugar. It does not score the rest of the food.

Questions

Why doesn't honey flag?

V1's added refined sugar list follows the named refined sugars and syrups in the catalog. Honey and maple syrup are omitted on purpose. A household that wants them can ask for that in a later list; they are not silently included.

Does 'no added sugar' flag the word sugar?

No. Phrases that negate the ingredient, including no added sugar and sugar-free, are excluded.
